Careers Inquiry

In Social Studies we have been learning about diffrent careers. We were then to reasearch a career that is of intrest to me. I choose to reasearch being a physician. I found it intresting finding out about what people in the job like and what they dislike about the job.

FQ 1: What does my chosen Job entail?

1. Provide a one paragraph written overview / summary of your job. - General Physicians are highly trained who provide a range of non - surgical health care to adults. They care for serious, difficult or uncommon cases. They continue to see the patient until they are better or have stabilized. Most of their work takes place in the hospital and they see most of their patients in thier consultation room.

 

2. What are the working conditions like?

• They work long hours and irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays

• Work in hospitals, clinics and private practices

• work in conditions that may be stressful because they deal with seriously ill patients 

• May travel locally to visit hospitals in their region or travel overseas to attend conferences2

3. What skills and knowledge are required for this career?

• anatomy and how the body works

• different diseases and illnesses

• medicines and treatments 

• diagnostic skills

• research, treatment and practises

• medical ethics and laws

4. What are the personal qualities that you require to do this job?

• motivated and disciplined

• able to work well under pressure

• able to make good decisions and solve problems

• excellent at analysis and interpretation

• good at report writing 

• good at communicating and inspiring confidence in others

• understanding of other cultures and their views to medical treatment

5. What are the key tasks that you will do in this job?

• examine patients and investigate and identify complex medical problems

• consult with other medical professionals about patient care and treatment

• advise on medical treatment and discuss this with patients or their caregivers

• provide medical treatment, check patient's progress and provide follow up care

6. How much will you earn? Salary? And what are the work hours like?

• Registrars working for a district health board (DHB) usually earn between $72,000 and $182,000 a year.
  - Qualified physicians working for a DHB usually earn between $155,000 and $219,000.

• Physicians working in the private sector can earn more than this. Those at the top level can earn up to $600,000.

7. What training and education is required for this career? How long does the training take and cost?
   Complete the first year of the Health Sciences program and then complete a five -year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree at either University of Otago or Auckland. Work for two years as a supervised Junior doctor in a hospital, then complete 6 more years in specialized training

8. What pre-requisites are there to get into the training course? NCEA level 3, a year of health sciences, a bachelor of surgery and bachelor of medicine

9. What subjects will you need to study in school to prepare you for this career? NCEA Level 3 Mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, health and english
